The program is a partnership of the New Jersey Business & Industry Association (NJBIA), the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development (LWD) and the New Jersey Community College Consortium for Workforce and Economic Development.

Companies that are members of NJBIA or a New Jersey-based chamber of commerce are automatically eligible to participate in the new program.

There is no charge to employers for the training, but employees must be paid at their usual hourly rate during the training sessions. Classes are available on-site at company locations or at any of the 63 community college campus locations across the state

The Consortium will work with the company to select basic skills courses from among the four core units available:
  1. Basic communication (verbal and written)
  2. Mathematics and measurements
  3. English as a second language
  4. Computer applications (Windows, Word, Excel and Outlook).

Working within the basic course outlines, each of these courses will be customized to meet the specific needs of most employers in New Jersey.

Companies can use these classes to improve the overall skills of their workers or to target specific internal projects requiring improved basic skills. Examples of uses range from an employer that needs to improve internal written communication for company memos, to those that need to improve telephone-reception communication skills. Other uses might be targeted to improve English language skills for production-line workers or computer skills needed for office-data collection.
